What are zirconia crowns?

Zirconia crowns are a dental restoration used to replace missing teeth or improve the appearance and function of exiting worn down teeth. They are often used with dental implants (for stability) and dental bridges or held in place with a dental bond/cement over existing teeth.

Zirconia (Zirconium Oxide) is a strong ceramic material that can be used safely in humans and is regularly used in other medical aspects (e.g. artificial joints) because it offers high strength and durability.

Why would you need zirconia crowns?

There are many reasons why you may need to have a Zirconia crown:

What are the benefits of zirconia crowns?

Zirconia Crowns have some clear benefits compared to other types of crown materials:

  • Strength– Zirconia is a much stronger ceramic material than other crowns, and as a result, last longer.
  • Aesthetics– Zirconia crowns are not just made with function in mind, but they are made to blend in with your natural smile for beautiful results!
  • Minimal tooth preparation– When using zirconia crowns, there is minimal preparation to the tooth, meaning if for any reason the crown does need to be removed, the original tooth is preserved more.

How are zirconia crowns fitted?

Like other dental crowns treatments, fitting zirconia crowns involves two stages:

Stage 1

Your Ascent Dental Care dentist will assess your teeth, and measurements will be taken for the crown. Before the dentist does anything to your teeth, they will always consult you first and explain what is happening. The preparation of the tooth that the crown is going on will involve cleaning and a slight reshaping.

Impressions of your teeth will also be taken, which involves the patient opening their mouth and the dentist using putty to take an impression of the teeth. Sometimes we will use our digital intraoral scanner to record your teeth, which means impressions are not required. The impression or scan will be sent to the dental laboratory to assist in the creation of the new crown.

Stage 2

When the crown comes back from the dental lab, it will be ready to be fitted. The crown will either be fitted onto an existing tooth that has been previously prepared, or it will be securely attached to a dental implant (if the patient is replacing a missing tooth).

When the crown is being fitted, the dentist will always ensure it looks natural and in the correct place before it is finally placed. The crown will then be given a final polish to ensure it looks beautiful. Zirconia crowns and other types of crowns will require the same level of care and attention as cleaning natural teeth.
