What to do if you have a dental emergency?

We understand that you can never be fully prepared for every eventuality, and accidents can still happen. However, when they do, it is always good to know what you should do:

“I have broken a tooth!”

If you have a broken tooth or teeth, you must clean the area very carefully to lower the risk of infection. We advise that you use sterile gauze, which will help protect any area which is left exposed. If you can find the broken tooth or teeth, the best approach is to try and put them in water to preserve them as a short-term measure. You should then bring this to your emergency dentist appointment.

“My tooth is loose!”

If you receive a direct hit to the mouth area, then it is not uncommon for teeth to start to feel loose. If this occurs, the best approach initially is to apply an ice pack to the affected area, and if possible, attempt to insert the tooth or teeth back into the socket. Please call our Solihull emergency dentist team as soon as possible, as the earlier you are seen and dealt with, the higher the chance the tooth has to reattach, and the quicker it can heal.

“My tooth has been knocked out!”

If your tooth is knocked out, the quicker you get professional help and assistance, the more likely the tooth is to heal and reattach. If this happens, we advise holding the bigger part (the crown) rather than the root (which is the end part) of the tooth. If possible, you should try to clean the tooth to remove any coating material but remember to avoid contact with the root area. You should then (by inserting the root first) try and put the tooth back into the socket. A protective gauze should then be used to help cover the area. This should help temporarily until you can see our team at our Solihull dental practice. If you can’t insert the tooth back into the socket for any reason, then the next best thing would be to place it in milk, which will keep it moist. Once you have tried these steps, call us immediately.

“I think I’ve lost my filling!”

As soon as you lose a filling or a crown, it is very important to visit a dentist as soon as you can, because unprotected teeth can lead to further damage, pain and infection. Depending on your case, we are able to either replace your filling or re-fix your crown. In the event that you need a replacement restoration, we are able to make this in the same visit using CEREC digital dentistry.

“My gum is swollen and sore!”

Swelling in your gums and mouth can be a sign that you are suffering from an infection. If redness and pain are also present, we recommend visiting our dentists for an emergency appointment and immediate assistance. Untreated swelling can become a larger problem, causing more pain and discomfort, as the infection spreads in your mouth. If you are experiencing any pain, discomfort or swelling in your mouth, please do not hesitate to call us today to arrange your emergency appointment.

Whatever your dental emergency, call us as soon as you can. We will prioritise your case accordingly ensuring that you are seen as quickly as possible to receive our emergency dentists’ expert and compassionate treatment in Solihull.
