What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, more commonly known as “advanced gum disease”, is a disease that attacks the soft tissue and gums in your mouth.

Periodontitis forms when the initial stage of gum disease is left untreated. The term ‘periodontitis’ means ‘inflammation around teeth’. This stage is very severe as it can lead to teeth eventually falling out.

At this stage, you may notice more symptoms:

  • Teeth feel loose
  • Bad taste in the mouth and bad breath
  • Abscesses in gums
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Receding gums
  • Build up (excessive) of saliva

During the advanced stage of gum disease, the body’s natural defence is for the gums to start to recede away from the infection, which loosens up the teeth and eventually leads to tooth loss. The infection can grow along the gum line, causing the effects to spread to your whole mouth. Not only will the gums be affected, but it also attacks the supporting bone, which can lead to bone loss, meaning it could affect the chance of having dental implants at a further date.

Periodontic Treatment at Ascent Dental Care

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the treatment of periodontal disease. Advanced gum disease can be a serious condition that if left untreated and can cause your teeth to eventually start to fall out. If you do experience any bleeding, we do recommend you see your dentist so they can examine if it is gum disease. The earlier gum disease is spotted, the easier and less costly it will be to treat.

Our experienced hygiene team at Ascent Dental Care can create a bespoke periodontal treatment and maintenance package designed to keep the symptoms of periodontal disease at bay and prevent further damage and tooth loss. Our periodontic treatment can:

  • Eliminate bacterial toxins
  • Remove build-up of hardened plaque (calculus)
  • Remove infection
  • Disinfect the gum tissue
  • Implement & monitor an intensive home care regime based on individual needs
  • Provide regular ‘deep cleaning’ treatments (usually 3-monthly)

Quick and Painless Frenectomy Procedures at Ascent Dental Care

Suppose you’re suffering from your tongue or lip being attached to the soft tissue in your mouth. In that case, our dentists offer frenectomy treatment, which removes the extra tissue restricting movement in your mouth.

There are three types of frenectomies that we offer at Ascent Dental Care, including:

  • Lingual frenectomy – referring to the removal of soft tissue attached to the tongue
  • Labial frenectomy – referring to the removal of soft tissue attached to the lips – and can be quite a standard treatment for patients undergoing periodontal, orthodontic, denture treatments
  • A frenectomy can also be performed to remove soft tissue that is attached to the gingival tissue (between two teeth)

Frenectomies can be performed on both adults and children, so if you think you may require a frenectomy, please do not hesitate to arrange your FREE consultation with the dental professionals at Ascent Dental Care. We will examine your current condition, listen to your needs, and discuss the most suitable options with you.
