If you have missing teeth and have dentures for your lower jaw, you may have problems keeping the denture in position against the gums. In addition, many people find that they struggle to hold down their lower set of dentures, even with fixing glues and a tight-fitting.

The main problem is that lower dentures do not create as much suction as an upper set, can move in the mouth, or even come loose while eating, talking or drinking. If you are struggling with these problems, then there are a few solutions available to you.

Getting your dentures fitted correctly and securely

If you have had dentures for a while now, then you may need to return to your dentist and make sure that they are correctly fitted in the mouth. This is because, over time, the gums below the dentures will recede, causing them to become loose inside the mouth. If you think that this is part of the problem, then don’t hesitate to contact your nearest Ascent Dental Care dentist. It is also important to have dentures realigned every two years to address any changes in the mouth.

Adjusting how you eat and speak whilst wearing dentures

If your dentures have been expertly fitted, but you are still struggling with loose false teeth, then you may need to adjust your eating and speaking to accommodate the plate. For example, you may need to chew on both sides of your mouth evenly, avoiding placing excessive pressure on one side. It may also help to place your tongue in a different position in the mouth when at rest. Resting the tongue against the lower teeth can displace the denture, and you may need to retrain your mouth so that the tongue is held away, helping to keep the dentures in position.

Dental implants for a secure solution to missing teeth

If you are still struggling to keep your bottom dentures in place, perhaps you would consider a more permanent alternative such as dental implants. Dental implants are small titanium screws fixed into the jawbone with a natural-looking dental prosthetic secured on top. With lower dentures, implants are placed in four or five locations, and then the plate is added to the implant and secured tightly. Dental implants fit better than ordinary dentures and are designed to work in the mouth just like natural teeth, restoring function and aesthetics.
